Nutrition and Dieting Tips

  • Eat 5-6 small meals per day (every 3 hours).

  • Don’t skip or skimp on meals.

  • Eat breakfast every day. A healthy morning meal will limit cravings for high-sugar, high-fat snacks throughout the day.

  • Watch portion sizes. A serving is approximately the size of your palm or clenched fist.

  • Do not eat carbohydrates after 6:00pm.

  • Drink 6-8 glasses of water per day.

  • Determine the amount of water that your body needs each day with this equation: your weight/2 = # of ounces of water that you need

  • Combine protein, carbohydrates and some fats in every meal.

  • Make sure protein is included in every meal, this will help your body hold onto muscle. The more muscle you maintain or build the faster your metabolism will be.

  • Don’t starve yourself. This will cause you to lose more muscle than fat and your metabolism will slow down.

  • Make sure to you have enough vegetables in your diet, these are low in carbs and won’t spike your blood sugar. Choose moderate portions of pasta, bread and ready-to-eat cereal made from whole ground wheat.

  • You don’t have to avoid starchy vegetables, just be sure to combine them with protein and small amount of fat that helps to slow the process of absorption.

  • Supplement your diet with monounsaturated fats like olive, canola and flaxseed, including walnuts, peanuts and avocados which are healthy fats to help satisfy hunger.

  • Cut down on unhealthy fats like margarine, fried foods and foods that contain hydrogenated oils.

  • Avoid fruit juices enjoy a piece of fruit instead.

  • Watch your calories. You can’t eat all the low fat/low carb foods that you want because these calories add up.

Exercise Tips

  • You should try to do some type of exercise for at least 20 minutes first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. The body will be in optimal fat burning mode at this time. (running, walking, cycling, etc.).

  • Cardiovascular exercise is good for better overall health and helps to burn calories and fat

  • Try to do some type of resistance/weight training at least 2-3 times per week. This will help your body hold onto and build muscle. This also boosts the use of fat as fuel and taps into stored fat.

  • Weight training helps decrease fat storage by reducing elevated insulin levels and promoting the release of growth hormone. This stimulates the growth of lean muscle mass and the repair of body tissue.

  • Exercise is important because the more muscle that you can hold onto while dieting the faster your metabolism will be and you will also look better and more fit.

  • Follow a set schedule, it helps to make exercise part of your daily routine.

  • You should alternate training days with recovery days to rest sore muscles and promote the repair and growth of lean tissue. This will help to burn fat more efficiently.

  • If you hit a weight plateau, boost your aerobic exercise a notch and change activities.

Stress Diffusing Tips

  • If you are under pressure, it is harder to lose weight. Stress and stagnation on the scale are linked.

  • When the brain perceives stress this alerts the adrenal glands to produce cortisol – the stress hormone. This can cause the deposit of fat to the mid-section. It is important to keep stress hormones in check to prevent the storage of excess body fat.

  • Get plenty of rest. During sleep, your muscles grow and your body recovers. Make an effort to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night.

  • Growth hormone is released during sleep which helps with recovery and relaxation that is essential for losing weight. This helps prevent the negative effects of stress hormones.

  • Aerobic exercise helps stress reduction and weight loss. It utilizes oxygen which promotes the release of endorphins “the feel good hormones”. This reduces stress and burns calories and fat.

  • Enjoy quiet time. Relax with a book, music or any activity that your find restful.
